Reviews of Retaliate First
Reviewed by Dom Gourlay (Rock City) , October 01
As yet another so-called "punk" band crosses the Atlantic and invades the top ten, it's good to see Blighty fighting back, even if our boys are probably as old as some of the young pups' dads! Resistance 77 released their first single back in 1982, in the days when George Michael was one half of Wham, leg warmers were all the rage thanks to the kids from 'Fame', and Elton John was still, thankfully, crap. Almost twenty years later, and still boasting two original members in vocalist Ian 'Oddy' Hodson and bass player Kieron Egan, Resistance 77 have shown up the kids good'n'proper with easily the best punk rock record you'll hear all year in 'Retaliate First'. Opening with the all out attack of 'Bored Forever', which sounds like the Ramones at their speed-fuelled best. Oddy spits "its so boring being bored" and renders the entire careers of Blink 182 and Green Day meaningless in the process. 'Steal Your Thunder' and 'Please Some People' continue in the same vein, all chugging riffs and no nonsense lyrics that display a sense of the underdog spirit, which characterize the integrity of the original punks. 'Kezze In De Kastelein' is the highlight of the album, as loud guitars and an even louder, football chant style chorus make you want to set fire to those Offspring albums once and for all! But before you dismiss Resistance 77 as a one card, three-chord trick, 'Far Away' and 'Pass Me The Bottle' show a completely different side to the band. The former is a wistful ballad recalling the 'good old days' whilst the latter's melancholic acoustic intro makes you think what the Stereophonics' 'Just Looking' might've sounded like if it had been written by the Clash's Mick Jones and played by the Pistols' Steve Jones rather than completely destroyed by Kelly Jones. Vive le Resistance - retaliation is sweet. At last the star spangled empire from across the water has something to strike back against.
